Event Recap: Powering Project Leadership Through Storytelling

Chapter News and Event Recaps
Power Skills

Project professionals are, first and foremost, leaders. While data and timelines are essential tools, a leader’s true impact comes from driving alignment, inspiring teams, and influencing stakeholders. At the June 16 PMI Central Indiana Chapter Meeting, guest presenter Andrew Black—a playwright, organizational development expert, and owner of Andrew Black Consulting—helped our members raise their game with an immersive workshop: "Tell the Story: Storytelling for Project Managers."

This wasn't your typical sit-and-listen presentation. It was a highly interactive, powerful evening that pushed attendees out of their usual comfort zones, expanding our perspectives on how strategic communication can maximize leadership impact.

The Science: Why Stories Are a Leader’s Secret Weapon

We often mistake "story" for mere entertainment, but cognitive science shows it is actually a system for structuring information to create context, relevance, and meaning. According to Stanford Neurobiology Professor Andrew Huberman, the human brain is naturally wired to compartmentalize knowledge into narratives.

Furthermore, research shows that when a group hears a story together, their autonomic nervous systems and heart rates actually synchronize. Storytelling acts as the ultimate psychological glue, building group cohesion and boosting decision-making quality.

Andrew introduced the M.O.R.E. framework to show how narrative enhances project leadership:

  • M = Manage Perceptions: Shapes how stakeholders understand risk, progress, and value.
  • O = Own Project Success: Connects project outputs to human outcomes and organizational impact.
  • R = Relentlessly Reassess: Packages new data and lessons learned into a digestible format.
  • E = Expand Perspectives: Connects leaders to the hearts and minds of customers, sponsors, and teams.

Hands-On Leadership: Breaking Out of the Comfort Zone

What made this chapter meeting truly unique was the hands-on practice. Andrew shared a golden rule for the session: separate the skill of organizing the story from the act of telling it.

Putting theory into immediate action, participants broke into small groups to transform real-world project challenges into compelling messages. Moving away from standard bullet points, groups collaborated to map out their narratives using Andrew's process.

The room was buzzing as members stepped up to practice telling their crafted stories aloud. It was a fantastic opportunity to experiment with new communication tools, receive real-time feedback, and approach leadership hurdles from a fresh, human-centric angle.

Final Thoughts

By mastering purposeful storytelling, Central Indiana project leaders left equipped to increase their impact, elevate stakeholder communication, and drive successful project adoption. The memorable evening proved that when you change the narrative, you change the outcome.

The next time you face a critical stakeholder update or project kickoff, don't just present the data. Lead and Tell the Story!
